A Unique Beginning
When a group of professional pilots lost their group life coverage through mergers in the airline industry, they began a lengthy search for a group plan. To meet this challenge, Professional Pilot Insurance Plan was designed and implemented in April, 2002.
This first plan to be administered by RBI Advisory Group was soon followed by other pilot association plans.
RBI Advisory Group now provides group benefit services to various industries across Canada.
Captain Bruce Sinclair
My name is Bruce Sinclair. I have been a full-time professional pilot continuously for over 36 years. I have experienced the industry from flight instruction to the left seat of a wide-body jet.
When NWT Air was sold to First Air, my fellow pilots and I lost our representation by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA). As a result, we were no longer eligible for coverage under the ALPA optional life insurance plan. I was tasked to investigate the possibility of alternate coverage on behalf of my fellow pilots.
For two years, I searched for equivalent replacement group coverage and was unable to find a similar plan available for Canadian airline pilots. I also discovered that individual term life insurance was substantially more expensive than group coverage, especially for pilots. At the same time, I approached several insurance companies with the idea of establishing a group plan similar to the ALPA plan. Professional Pilot Insurance Plan was born out of these efforts. Since the initial launch of this program in 2002, over $2.4million plus interest settlement has been claimed and paid out to the beneficiaries of your fellow pilots. We want to ensure this value added program does not get overlooked by those who qualify – YOU!
Generally pilots are "rated" for insurance coverage and have to pay higher than average premiums because all insurance companies consider that flying adds additional risk. Most life insurance policies include lifestyle limitations, especially in regards to flying activities.
